Patchworker Profile: Pat Johnson

We talk a lot about what we’ve been making and creating, but we thought it would be fun to have a look at what YOU – our loyal customers – are creating! So we’re introducing the patchworker profile, where we have a little peak at what one of our crafters is up to.

So this week we’re introducing you to Pat Johnson. Pat is a regular attendee of our Thursday class, and she is a prolific creator – always trying her hand at new techniques!

Check out some pictures of her creations below, and trust when we say that these are just a very small sample of what we could have photographed!

Pat tells us that she grew up with sewing all around her, and that her mum always made lovely creations for her family, but that Pat only decided that patchwork was for her in the last five years.

Her favourite creation to date is the Celtic quilt pictured below.

Pat has been awarded multiple first and second place certificates in the last few years at the Parkes Annual Show, and did very well again this year.

Another epic effort of Pat’s was the creation of her Splendid Sampler, which she entered into the Sydney Quilt Show. Pat did the maths on all the tiny peices in this quilt, and reports that there’s over 3000 pieces. This quilt is seriously beautiful.

Thank you to Pat for letting us share some of quilts. They’re just so beautiful.

Well done to all the ladies and gents who entered in the Parkes Annual Show 🙂

Upcoming Classes for 2017

So, we’ve been promising to lock in a few more classes for you, and so now we have an update!

2nd – UFO day

What’s a UFO? It’s short for Un-Finished Object. On our UFO days we invite you to bring a project that you haven’t had the chance to finish yet – perhaps from a previous class, or something that’s been hiding in a cupboard for years. Set aside this time with like-minded crafters, and let us help motivate you to get the project done!

Time: 9am-4pm
Cost: $20
Inclusions: Morning and afternoon tea
BYO:  Project, and lunch!

23rd – Foundation Paper Pieced Bag

Remember this adorable dress block from the Splendid Sampler?

This block is foundation paper-pieced. If that’s a technique that you’d like to try, we’re incorporating it into an adorable bag.

Time: 9am-4pm
Cost: $75
Inclusions: Morning and afternoon tea, materials
BYO:  Lunch

14th – Holiday Patchwork Forest

Have you ever tried improv (improvisational) piecing?

DSC_0476 (2)

This fun and easy pattern is a great introduction to improv. We’ll be using the free tutorial from Diary of a Quilter to re-create this lovely pattern, which is intended as a Christmas quilt, but would also make a sweet children’s quilt.

Time: 9am-4pm
Cost: TBA
Inclusions: Morning and afternoon tea, materials for the quilt top
BYO:  Lunch

28th – Powwow Quilt

This one was a long time coming! We made a sample that we talked about a few months ago – click here to see the original post.

The pattern is by Cluck Cluck Sew, and we’ll be making the quilt top together using a layer cake.

Time: 9am-4pm
Cost: TBA
Inclusions: Morning and afternoon tea, materials for the quilt top, and the pattern
BYO:  Lunch

TBA – UFO day

Just the same as our UFO day in September!

TBA – Baby Bits and Bobs

We all know someone who has recently welcomed a precious little one into their lives! So we’re having a day dedicated to making all those useful bits and pieces for new families, like bibs, burp cloths, and swaddle blankets. The day will be a little choose-your-own-adventure, but we hope by the end of the day that you will have a happy little package of goodies to give away.

TBA – Christmas Table Runner

A quick and fun Christmas craft that’s achievable in the day. Don’t forget that this is a great opportunity to make some time for yourself as the busy season approaches! 😉

TBA – UFO day

Did you have anything to you were hoping to finish in time for Christmas? This is the perfect time to get it done!

School Holidays Classes for High Schoolers

The dates will be September 26th and October 3rd (Tuesdays). Further details on what we’re making and exact times will follow.

If you would prefer a print-out version of this class list, please click here – Semester 2 2017 schedule.

If you have any questions, just give us a call or drop in to the shop.

The Best Kind of Chaos

It’s been far too long since we’ve updated this page, and there’s really no good excuse for it! All we can say is that we’re in the middle of the best kind of chaos – keeping busy doing what we love.

Just like our last post, there are lots of little updates to share!

The roof tiles are nearly all gone, and replaced with beautiful new Colourbond! We look forward to listening to the next rain 🙂

Don’t let the scaffolding put you off, though – it’s still business as usual! Feel free to swing by, say hi, and have a stickybeak!

Splendid Sampler Book

Remember these stunning quilts?

Well now you can purchase the book to make your own version!

DSC_0150 (2)

The book is just $60, and includes all 100 block designs and instructions, tips and tricks, as well as suggested layouts. Of course, if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of that wonderful information, just ask us – we’d be happy to help with choosing fabrics and making a plan.

If you’d like to see other people’s spin on this beautiful sampler, we highly recommend checking out the dedicated Facebook page:

Positively Perfect Nap Quilt Class

We held our first quilty class for the year, and it was a hit! Thanks again to the ladies who came along and made it so much fun. We had a blast!

The goal is to run a specific class one saturday each month from here on in, and we’d like to hear from you! What kind of classes would you like to see? Baby quilts, throw quilts, cushions, bags, modern patterns, traditional techniques, skills like applique, foundation paper piecing, english paper piecing, improvisational piecing? The list goes on and on!

Class suggestions

Why don’t you make suggestions in the comments? Or on our facebook page?

Rope Bag Class

Speaking of future classes, would you like to come make a Rope Bag with us?

We’re running a class on 19th August 2017! Places are limited, and filling fast! You can click here for more details -> Rope Bag Class

Well, that’s all the news for now! Hope you’re having a good week and that the recent rain has been good for you 🙂

A Lot to Report

I’m one of those people who frequently answers the question “How are you?” with “Busy!”. At the moment, though, I think it’s especially true for our little shop! There’s plenty happening that we can update you on.

Sewing for Highschoolers

We had our first sewing class for high schoolers last week. Thanks to the girls for being such good sports! If you think you know someone who might be keen, there’s still places left in our class this Tuesday. We’ll be making a tote bag. More details in the previous blog post.

Thread Adventures

DSC_0009 (2)

We’ve started stocking Gutermann thread again! We have the 100% cotton in 250m or 800m spools. We’re still in the process of fully kitting up, so we apologise for any delay in re-filling your favourite colour – feel free to let us know which ones you use most so we can include it in our next order.

A New Night Class

We’re starting night classes. It’s BYO project, and we’ll provide tea and coffee, and a group of like-minded crafters to share with. Perfect for people who work full time, and the shop is open to those who attend (i.e. if you run out of something while you’re hanging out with us, it’s right there in the shop for you to purchase and keep going – how good is that!). We start Tuesday, 6.30pm, cost is $15. Hope to see you there!

Quilts for Sale

We LOVE making quilts. I know – it’s probably not a surprise. What it means, though, is that our families are sick of receiving quilts as gifts, and so we have quilts to sell! We’ve added an extra page to this website, where we will list the quilts we have available in the shop. How about you go have a little browse! If you’d like to purchase one, drop in to the shop, give us a call, or use the “Contact” page and let us know. Or if there’s one you want someone to purchase for you, now you have a way of showing them without dragging them into the shop 😉

As always, there’s plenty more in the works, but you’re probably already suffering from information overload, so we’ll leave it there for now!

See you soon!

Splendid Sampler – Pat’s Version by Pat Johnson

Don’t think we’ve forgotten!

We promised to host a class on how to make this Positively Perfect Nap Time quilt!

DSC_0752 (2)

Well the details are all here! It will run 9am-4pm on Saturday, 29th July 2017.

Click on this link for the poster with full details: Positively Perfect Nap Quilt

The most important thing to know, though, is that the class costs $125 for the day (including your jelly rolls of fabric and morning & afternoon tea), and if you pay before the day, we will pre-cut your fabric for you! Yup! You heard right! You can just rock-up, sit down, and sew!

Please note: There was an error in the original poster for this class. It has been updated since 6pm, 27/06/17. If you have an earlier copy, please download the new one.

But wait! There’s more!

This school holidays we are also doing something a little different – offering some basic sewing classes for high schoolers. Places are limited though! We’ll be making notebook covers and a basic tote bag.

Notebook Covers – $25 Tote Bag – $40
1.00-3.00pm, Tuesday 4th July 2017

BYO Notebook (preferably A5) or buy one from us (additional $5).

12.30-4.00pm, Tuesday 11th July 2017

The teacher for these classes will be Nicole Williams and the cost includes fabric (variety of colours and patterns available) and afternoon tea. This class is suitable for beginners, but places are limited.

Follow this link for more details: Holiday Sewing for High Schoolers

For all classes:

–           BYO sewing machine: There are a few spare sewing machines for those without, but it’s first in – best dressed. It’s good if you know the basics of how to use your machine (i.e. how to thread it, refill a bobbin, and sew a straight line). If you need help learning to use your machine, please talk to us beforehand so we can be sure you’re ready to go on the day.

–          BYO basic notions (i.e. thread, scissors, pins, etc.). If you’re short on any notions, we can help kit you out!

We really hope you can join us in the coming weeks! We’re excited!

Positively Perfect Nap Quilt

If you’ve been in and out of the shop over the last few weeks, you’ve quite possibly seen this quilt in one stage or another of it’s creation… it’s both a delight and a relief to have it done and to be sharing it.

DSC_0752 (2)

The pattern is by April Rosenthal for the Moda Bakeshop – so it’s free! Follow this link to see the original.

It’s made pretty much from a jelly roll (or two, if you’re lazy like me – you can use a solid coloured jellyroll for the background). I used Spectrum by V & Co. for Moda for the colours, and a white Bella Solid for the background.

This isn’t the first time I’ve made this quilt either… I think this is a great example of how different colourways totally alter the feel of a quilt. Below is my first edition (forgive the poor quality photo!) – I made it for my sister’s wedding using Persimmon by Basic Grey for Moda.

In July, we plan on running a class for you to make this quilt with us. Save the date – July 29th, 2017, with more details to follow! At the shop we have quite a variety of jellyrolls to suit anyone’s taste (classic, modern, floral, graphic, even Christmas!), so if you’d like to come reserve your choice before they’re all gone, we’d love to help you! You can collect your plain jellyroll for the background too. Feel free to register your interest in attending the class with us as well.

DSC_0761 (2)

We look forward to seeing you there!

Powwow Quilt

DSC_0167 (2)

The Powwow quilt is a modern classic. The pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew is so versatile and playful.

This particular variation has been created using Grand Canal by Kate Spain for Moda. It’s a size between the baby and throw sizes listed in the pattern, allowing all 42 pieces of a layer cake to be used. This pattern usually uses a small collection of 30cm pieces.

The quilting has little dragonflies, and the backing is from Anna-Maria Horner’s loominous collection. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but it has a delightful sparkle to it, that just completes the playful nature of this quilt.

This quilt comes together surprisingly quickly, especially if you chain piece. We hope to have a class for this quilt up and running in August, along with our Lucky quilt class (another Cluck Cluck Sew pattern!). We can’t wait to see your personal touches added to these patterns!
